Film direction is a tough job, and if it's an action thriller film, the pressure is even more. But an action thriller film requires an easy to understand story and a gripping screenplay, so that the audience remain hooked till the end, and this is where director Ribhu Dasgupta has gone terribly wrong. This film is about an undercover female Indian agent, who goes to Turkey for a secret mission, and gets her personal life involved. The director known for directing films like Teen (written as Te3n) has seemingly lost it this time around. For the entire 2 hour and 15 minutes runtime, I've found only three positive things in this film.
First, the idea to cast a female actor for an action film is commendable, although her character wasn't written properly. Second, the cinematography has been really good here. The handheld camera work, and the gorgeous landscapes provided a relief. Also, the 3 minute one take sequence has been shot very nicely, and that's my third positive point for this film. The only sequence that I enjoyed in this film is the pre climax first person game like one take action sequence. That is choreographed and directed very nicely. This is where the positives for this film end for me. The rest is a mess. Parineeti Chopra as RAW agent Durga Singh does fine, but she can't get on top of the writing (which isn't possible as such) and hence her performance makes no serious impact. Harrdy Sandhu as Mirza Ali (Durga's husband) does quite a good job. Sabsyasachi Chakraborty has been wasted with only two or three scenes here and there. You do not remember the music as such after the film gets over, because you are left with more questions than answers (which could've been solved had the writing been better).
The writing is.... I don't know what it is. It's strange to be fair. The story needed to be simple but compelling enough to hold the attention of the audience. The story here is lazy and doesn't really justify the need of making a film based on it. It's a mission centric film where there is no real mission, because the character who was allegedly bad, was actually not bad. Several characters enter into the screenplay and walk away unnoticed and handful of those who remain become sub antagonists, with the most eleventh hour non contributing (towards the screenplay), dumb and unnecessary plotlines coming in to justify their antagonism.
The screenplay is so messed up, that the main villain Omar (Sharad Kelkar) forgets terrorism and pulls Durga's personal life into the mission, in retaliation of his family's disruption unintentionally caused by Durga. Even Durga forgets her mission and tries to kill Omar out of personal enmity. Towards the end things become very confusing, keeping the audience clueless about how are the scattered events combine for a climax anyway (which isn't really there in the film).
All in all, Code Name : Tiranga is a film that has messed up in majority of the departments. Most importantly, the film lacks even an inch of thrill or emotion. It's not like the film lacks emotional or thrilling scenes, but they're so underdeveloped, that one just wishes the things to get over as quickly as possible. Things go on happening and one just watches without any zeal, and feels damn bored after seeing the film which has only 135 minutes of runtime. The chase scenes start and end abruptly. The music (bgm) doesn't change and is almost the same for hand to hand action scenes and chase scenes. This shows the poor editing. While watching the chase scenes the audience can't help but yawn, while thinking about the purpose of the chase. The film ends with a hint for a sequel, but I don't think somebody would even dare to think about a successor to this kind of a predecessor film.
Also, the mission which was codenamed Tiranga in this movie turned out to be nothing. Then what's the justification of the movie title ? We shall never know.
