Meg 2 The Trench Movie Review: Why So Unserious ?

Meg 2 The Trench is the sequel to the film Meg released in 2018. Jason Statham plays the lead character Jonas Taylor, while Wu Jing, Cliff Curtis, Page Kennedy and others playing supporting roles. The first film was a fun shark film, and the director Ben Wheatly tries to keep the sequel on the same note.
This film follows an underwater expedition by Jonas Taylor organised by the Mana One organisation to find other Megalodons in the Mariana Trench. On their way they find an illegal water station which is owned by the villains and the subsequent events and shark encounters makes up this entire film.

From the very beginning, the film is very over the top (as one would expect it to be) and self aware at the same time. The makers know what the audience expect and so they've made this film accordingly. It's a fun film after all with story and screenplay going for a toss, which is generally the case for Jason Statham films. The previous film of the franchise was also of the same pattern, but it's action sequences were designed with more conviction and had an emotional connect, which seems to be missing in this sequel film. Things go on happening and one feels things very less, in terms of emotion, thrill and other aspects as well.
The cinematography is good, although the cg work is poor at some places. The comedy is decent, and although being written in an average manner, is carried out nicely on screen.
The villains are reduced to mere caricatures and are only there either to be beaten up by Jason Statham or to be eaten up by the Meg, both of which happen simultaneously in the film (and I'm not joking). The thrill factor is there in the starting of the film, but fades away when the film reaches it's climax. The performances are one dimensional, but they actually make up for a film of this kind. You cannot expect more and you do not get more either in terms of performances.
The Mariana Trench can have different undiscovered animals and creatures, so imagining them and incorporating those imagined creatures in the screenplay as real ones is good creative liberty. But at the same time what were the creatures at the ending part of the film ? It looked like Jurassic World and Meg had a cross over. Those animals,  their odd deeds, coupled with bad cgi make up for a strange feeling which probably everybody would feel.
And Megs obeying humans ? What was that ? Although the makers left this question open for the audience to answer it's quite evident that the makers are so obsessed with sharks that they are willing to pet the sharks. Thar was some very odd stuff.

All said and done, Meg 2 The Trench is a 120 minutes long fun shark film, which is carried out generally by the star power of Jason Statham. One shouldn't ask too many questions while watching the film, but some of the scenes actually convince the audience to do that. Those were just abnormal stuff coming into play which even questions the makers' perceived IQ of the audience. They could've done better while handling emotions and action, but this is a film that will be enjoyed by people (mostly as a guilty pleasure) and will mint money nonetheless. The only thing is, if this franchise goes on expanding like this, it may be called as (God Forbid) a Stupid Shark Franchise rather than a Fun Shark Franchise.
